I have heard this term when referring to horses that haven't been drinking enough water and are dehydrated... what exactly does being 'tucked up' refer to and what does it look like? Thanks.

They get tucked up around the flank area - a bit what a really fit galloper looks like. Looking like a "racing sardine" is one of the expressions we use here, but that might be even harder to explain :rolleyez:

My latest rescue was like that his first few days, I don't know if this pic illustrates it or not...

I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the picture?

Look at his flanks. His stomach is sucked up like he's holding his breath. Here's another picture...

Compared to a few days later...

It's hard to tell, but there's a noticeable difference. It was extremely notable in person.

Yes, the second picture squeak posted shows it well. His flank area is extremely sucked up, and that is what a dehydrated horse will look like.

Interesting. That's just from being dehydrated?

    No. That's "sucked" up.

"Tucked up" is what a fit horse looks like. His belly has no roundness to it. Let me see if I can find an example.

It's a bit extreme since he's in trot mode.
