I have ridden in a Hereford (before they were bought out by TexTan) western saddle for almost 30 years--love it and am fortunate that it fits the TWH mare we rescued a year ago. While the rough out seat is starting to look worn, the leather in this saddle is still fantastic and I still get many compliments on the tooling and how pretty the saddle is.

My hubby has an old Hereford roping saddle. It is well made but way too narrow for any of the horses we have now.

    Got a pic?

Does it have buckstitching? That is one good indicator.

Can you find a serial number on the saddle??? That will give you the information needed to date it.

Texas Tanning is their old name from '405s or '50s and earlier. From at least the '60s on, I am fairly certain that the TexTan name was in use. Styling is a better clue to the age. Post some pictures.
