My horse is 31 and pulled a cart until his previous owner passed away a few years ago. He wasn't really ridden by his previous owner (the guy was in his 90's) so he wasn't really used to it. He still doesn't follow commands very well. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work on that?

At 31 you are allowed to do your own thing...

first, the horse is 31 years old.. why must you ride him?

second, if he hasn't really been ridden, he's not trained to know cues.

Maybe he is hearing impaired and has some senility due to his high age of 31??

Be more subtle. Just tweak the rein lightly and tell the horse to “Gee“ for turn right and “Haw“ for turn left. Tell him “Steady“ if he is increasing trot speed.

31 is positively ancient for a horse. There's a good chance he knows cues perfectly well but is so sore and tired he doesn't care.

I mean, I ride my 30 year old, he enjoys drinking around...
But I agree, if he hasnt really been ridden, you should start from the ground and work your way up, which may or may not r doable

Don't you think you should limit the number of bars he frequents of a night? o_O
