I want to purchase an used SMM Wade saddle and it's the first time I hear about this brand. The reviews are nice:

I'd like to know your opinion. Is it a good brand or not? It says it's hand-made in USA.

To me it looks tacky and cheap but the prices must be high for some reasons! The leather looks stiff and the glossy varnish makes me think it's painted not dyed. Also, I don't see many website and/or google images for their stuff. It really doesnt seem popular. Another thing that rings my bell is the MRSP for used SMM that is really low... for 2 yrs old saddles, barely used, with a starting price of 2600$ new, it sells for 200$-400$... there must be something wrong!

Here's the stirrup of the saddle I want, the way you see the color strokes over the leather makes me think it was painted on with a stiff bristles brush...

Looks like American skirting leather to me. The light/dark streaks could be from abrasion, as oil will penetrate more where the scratches and scuffs are. The edges are nicely beveled. Aside from what little detail I can see of the stamping on the stirrup, none of that photo looks like cheap to me. But I don't know that brand, and their web site doesn't really give any details about whose saddle trees they use or whether the saddles are actually USA-made.

It's hard to really tell from the pictures.

This picture screams cheap to me. I don't know if it is because the plate isn't silver or the shiny leather or what. :-/ I've learned that this plate means it is a "Gold Label" saddle...

I think the leather looks stiff and is shiny which I don't like. It's weird how the saddle strings come straight out of the conchos and I don't like that dent in the seat. I'm confused because the saddles on the website are priced fairly expensive yet I've never even seen one of their saddles in person. I would definitely get more information before considering buying one.

Hmmm, I'm going to stick to staying away from this brand.

Here's one of their saddles on eBay for cross reference.

Things I don't like how they look: tooling, streaks in leather color/finish, fenders turned the wrong way, screws on the top of the seat, and the silver (looks cheap/fake). I know you're looking at a different model but brand quality should be uniform across all models.

There are other models on eBay and now I'm even more confused because they seemed expensive on the website but the most expensive one on eBay is just over $700.

Are you thinking about buying this one?

Sorry if my replies seem all over the place. I like to educate myself (as well as others) because tack is an investment and I hate to see someone pay too much for a new, no-name (or not well-known) saddle. Money is better spent buying great quality, used.

Well I 100% agree with you! Yes the saddle I want is the 2nd link you posted and the starting price was only 100$ when I wrote this thread. I guess some ppl decided to bid too ;)
for only 100$ (lets say 200$ with shipping) I think it would have been a nice saddle.
But I'm also very bugged by the poor attention to details. The fake silver, the wierdly wrapped horn and the strings, the way the color is uneven and I hate hate hate shinny leather!!! but for 200$, a full-qh fully carved wade, I dont say no. lol!
I look online to find the perfect wade saddle since years and even the 8k ones doesnt suit me, I'd have to completely design my own to be satisfied. Martin saddlery offers some customizations but not the ones I want... this SMM is the one that looks the most like the one I have in my head :)
But I guess it's poor quality.
