I went to a barrel raace not to long ago with my friend and normaly she would be running but the lady that trailers for her couldent make it so we just went to watch and work the gate.. Anyway i saw some very small kids with rubberbands to hold there there feet in the stirups?? is this something alot of people do? It was new to me. In my oipinion i think before a kid goes to a barrel race he or she sould know basics on how to keep there feet in the stirrups but thats just me its not so bad for the extreamly little kids but i saw some older girls doing it aswell i don't think its fair and i would never do it becasue i would be scared it wouldent break (haahah OF course it WOULD but im paranoid) :blushing:

anyways what your opioion on this matter?

A normal rubber band will break if you fall off, it's the really thick, super strong ones that scare me.

I prefer not to use them but know lots of people that do. I've never had an issue with my feet coming out of the stirrups during a run though.

I'm actually with you..cant tell you how many times I was at an english show and somone came off, and the 'break away' stirrups didn't break away....

I don't think a rubber band is really going to make much difference anyway, but if it makes the parents feel better....personally I'd be worried it WOULD snap, at the wrong time and set off a pony. I know those suckers hurt when they snap and nail me!

I did some volunteering at a therapeutic riding center, and they do put elastics on some of the kids' feet then.... It depends on the rider, but often it's so that the rider's feet stay in the stirrups better. The elastics I saw used were really thin and would break easily if the rider fell... But in general, the rider shouldn't fall because the ponies/horses these kids ride are incredibly safe, and each child has a sidewalker to support them if needed, and someone to lead the pony as well.

I don't know about able-bodied riders doing it though...

I use just normal rubberbands that you buy at like walmart or office depot. I use them for speed events except for goat tying (duh :D) and in 4h (thats a no no here). I tend to lose atleast one stirrup more oftend then not. I like having the reassurance that i can keep my legs where theyre supposed to be and still keep my mighty beast running :)

I say that you should learn how to keep your feet in the stirrups, and that if you can ride properly that shouldn't really be a problem. Not saying that people who use the rb dont... but yeah. Heels down, good seat, soft hands. No reason to rubber band your feet. (Unless like mentioned its a therapeutic rider.)

When I did 4H as a kid a lot of kids used them for barrels and poles...I never did, of course I had a habit of lifting my leg up if I was going to hit a barrel! One girl's mom bought her a completely trained barrel horse..all she did was hang on for the ride, they always rubber banded her feet. She was so terrified of running the horse that she always ended up throwing up before or after the run.

Ok thanks guys for your opinions :)

I just think if your older and are gaming you should be able to keep your feet in and if they fall out you can always put it back in and or wait out the run if you have any common sense your just going to hold on tp the horn :)

I agree with every one.. but; i dont think its HORRIBLE. i kind uh see why they do it.. Like just to keep them from not falling out if the stirrup so they dont have to re adjust, while there going 45 miles an hour. but it is risky. But its a risk there willing to take i guess, i personally probably wouldnt do it, but i can see why they doo.
