Where is the best place to get a horse tested for pssm 1? Do you need a bloodtest or a hair sample is sufficient?

Its just a precautionary thing because apparently the dam used to tie-up when she was racing

Is the dam a Thoroughbred? RER, Recurrent Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, is seen quite often on the track. There isn’t a test for that. PSSM 1 test is $40 at Animal Genetics I believe, PSSM 2 testing is not peer reviewed but they have 3 labs replicating results with EquiSeqs methods, it’s $250 for 4 different variants.

Tie ups can also be from dehydration and many other things.

Is the horse a quarter horse or thoroughbred? Quarter horse could have either and thoroughbred only PSSM2 variants. PSSM1 you can just use hairs. PSSM2s depends on whether you believe in their science since it has not finished being peer reviewed to make it official it is genetic. If you do, they can do hairs in the US. Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy type 2 (PSSM2) Test | EquiSeq Otherwise, it is a muscle biopsy.

Even the muscle biopsy is a gamble. If the muscle they biopsy simply isn’t damaged yet, you can get a false negative. If the sample is handled to rough you can get a false positive.

Racebred aqha(dam is mr eye opener out of a hempen X qh mare). He is three and I don't think there is anything wrong with him, but I just found out his 7 year old full brother is unsound due to a blood disorder and it sounds like pssm 1. They can't pinpoint the lameness after 3500$ in tests and injections

If PSSM1 is possible I’d definitely test.
