I have a 4 year old horse that passes gas on a regular basis. Mostly while he is being ridden, thus I could only notice it then because I am not around him while he is in his pen. Is this normal and if not what could be causing this? Any info would be great- thanks.

Yeah, if he suddenly stops passing gas, then you have to worry...about colic.

its normal. they do it when they are relaxed or happy. It releases the toxins from their bodies.

My mare is a gas-aholic. Like she does it all the time. When she is on the cross ties she passes gas on me when I clean out her feet. Someone said it was a way they show they love you. and someone else said it's how they try to make you a certain scent. Like how cats rub up against you to leave their scent. I duonno if thats true but yeap. totally normal, and like someone said above.. if it didn't occure you should be worried about colic. So be happy your horse passes gas!

"Someone said it was a way they show they love you" I must not be loved very much! LMAO. She passes gas when shes in her stall and stuff but not when I'm near her. I think she knows I dont appreciate it.

I know a horse that passes gas pretty much every step she makes if shes going faster then a walk. Its the funniest thing ever. The girl who rode her kept yelling "Hayda!!!" In a funny accent every time. (she really did have a strong accent for coming from Missouri! *lol*)
