OTC muscle relaxers for horses

    I was just curious if anyone has tried any type of human OTC muscle relaxing type gels, oils, or cream on horses?

    The ones I was think were icy hot, bengay, epsom salt, or any other human mentol topical pain reliever.

    No...not when there are awesome ones made for horses. :) We use something called "Blue Lotion" here which smells minty and is great for giving your horse a rubdown after a hard work, putting on legs to take the heat out, etc.

    You can also rinse them in a liniment rinse for sore muscles.

    I wouldn't use one for humans on a horse. I have had a very unpleasant experience with one turning burning hot on my neck before. I wouldn't want my horse to experience that.

    There are lots of good horse ones out there.

    What do you prefer? Im looking for something to bathe him with to relax his muscles.

    I am no help to you on the products available to you as I am on the other side of the world. I am not sure what you mean to bathe him in to relax the muscles. A massage with some good linament would work. :)

    Well, the blue lotion isn't for bathing...it's for applying directly. For bathing, I like Vetrolin products or Absorbine Liniment.

    We usually use diluted Bigeloil as a linament, diluted about 1:10 / 1:15 w/ water

    There's also a great product called "sore no more" that i have used, but it's extremely expensive compared to the bigeloil. Like $100 a gallon at the tack store if i remember correctly... but it's all natural/homeopathic if you like that sort of thing.

    Sore No More linement. I put it in a spray bottle and mist it over their legs & body. You can rub it in too if you want.

    Better question: Why is the horse getting sore muscles? Or is it as a preventive measure in case they might get sore after a hard work out?

    Massage and passive stretching (GENTLE) and body work do the trick for my guys if they come up stiff. Proper diet, too. Feed supplements such as Flax, SinewX and Glucosamine/MSM help with muscle recovery after work and minimize inflammation. Making sure the horse has adequate protein and amino acids coming into their diet helps keeps muscle healthy, too. I know I feel MUCH looser and pain-free when I'm drinking my whey protein shake every day (SO YUMMY--- Isoflex or BIO-ISL). Minimize starch/sugar intake if the horse doesn't need it for their job, and don't feed it excessively. Make sure they're not magnesium defficient.

    The only "topical" I use for sore or strained muscles in specific locations is ice/heat/ice 2 or 3 times, followed by gentle massage.

    Other preventives:

    - Really good conditioning program.

    - No overworking patterns/certain tougher movements "every single day". I had my first barrel pattern lope-through with Turbo yesterday. I trotted through, walked 2 laps of the pen, loped/trotted through, walked 5 laps of the pen, cantered through, walked 3 laps, cantered/galloped through, walked 5 laps... hand galloped/breezed at his own speed through, and then cooled out. He only did 3 patterns at a canter, none full speed, with lots of walking in between.

    Schedule from Tonight til next Saturday:
    Today: Aerobics, large circles.
    Tomorrow: Aerobics, short sprints.
    Sunday: Loping circles in the barrel square, 20-15ft radius.
    Monday: Sprints.
    Tuesday: Pattern work again.
    Wednesday: Aerobics, large circles.
    Thursday: Pattern, with speed.
    Friday: Aerobics, sprints.
    Saturday: Horse Show #1- possibly some english flat classes and one barrel run, practice, not pushing.

    And of course, keep toes rolled and heels short.... hoof balance, yada yada.
