My new horse has no withers. Mainly because she's fat. I ride western, so what size saddle do I need to get?

I am putting her on a diet/exercise program.

One that fits for sure :D

No one can tell you. Just as with people, you can have 6 people all over weight & weighing the exact same amount, and they will not fit into the same sized clothing.....or shoe size

If its the horse in your avatar, I don't think shes all that fat at all honestly. She has a defined back shape.

On to the OP, get a saddle fitter! They will find you one that fits in your budget and make sure it fits her correctly.

Lol. Ok. I've never had a horse with absolutely no withers before.

Withers are merely something to be cleared once everything else about the horse's back and shoulders has been properly fit. It sounds like you need to get a good saddle fitter out to get you started. Or, start posting pictures of your horse's back, and whatever saddles you can get your hands on sitting on her - girthed up but no pad.

In the meantime, read through this link

Then look here for more Western saddle-specific information

If she's fat, is she going to stay that way? If you fit her now and then get her into shape, maybe her "fat clothes" won't fit her anymore. I have this problem as the seasons change, but luckily I have different size saddles to fit a horse in whatever shape he/she happens to need.

    Well, well, well.

Where IN THE HECK have you been~!!!??? :D
Nice to see you back after all this time~!!

I'd ride in a bareback pad with a breastcollar and wait'll the horse loses some weight to get a saddle. Who knows what those withers and back will look like once she's lost some weight.

Hi manes, change your avatar. Lol... it's been a long time. Friend me on FB (Dixie Morgan) you won't lose me again.
I just bought her 3 days ago. I'm already falling in love with her and her disposition. She's a doll. Looks lime I need to get her down to size before I attempt to get a proper saddle, she may have some withers under all that fat.
