My horse rolls his top lip up at me showing his top teeth and raising his head?

Is this a sign of affection? What does it mean he does not do it often but I would like to know if it means he likes me? He did it today while I was spraying him with the hose. he did not back away, he seemed to enjoy it.

Don't worry it's not agression. They do lots when they smell something funny, or just to be goofy.

From what Ive always heard horses do that to get "a better smell of things" they have glands or something there and thats why they roll their lip up like that. Its weird I know. Mine do it if I feed them something that they dont like lol. Then they give me that face and I cant help but burst out laughing.

Usually horses will do that when they are smelling something(examples: A stallion when he smells a mare in heat, Or when I take some grass and tickle my mares nose...she lifts her top lift and smells the flower/end of it.) I guess as long as he isnt going to bite at you or try to harm you in any way there shouldnt be a problem. Not sure, maybe someone else might have a better idea. :)

This is called Flhemans(sp)response. Stallions do it to get a better scent of the mare or if they are just smelling something unfamiliar and trying to see what it is.

Yes, arabiangirl you are right. I just looked it up in one of my books, and its says that this action is known as flehmen, which may involve smelling with the sensitive membranes inside the lips, as well as the nostrils.
