OK... so... I've posted a thread or two about this horse before... but I've been gone for a year. Just got back... he's as skinny as all get out. I don't know much about teeth, but I opened up his mouth... one tooth is extremely sharp right next to the cheek? It looks broken... but I don't know much about teeth and stuff... so I could be very very wrong. My guess is that he's not able to eat as much due to teeth issues, and he could have underlying issues. As for what... I have no clue... I'm unable to contact a vet (I'm going to keep trying though), and his owners have had one out... just to look at his legs and feet (which are HORRID looking... I'll get pictures up tomorrow... they're on my phone and I can't find a USB cord)... but not much else. So... there very well could be an underlying issue, but from what I know he's not prone to colic... and... for the most part... my guess is that he's not getting enough fattening food. He IS being fed. More than the other horses. 70% roughage hay (not sure what type, will find out. Definitely not alfalfa or some other quality hay), 30% oats. He gets about half a square bale twice a day. Unsure of the weight... but the square bale is about the standard I guess of square bale sizes... I dunno... don't know too much about feed itself... just bare basics (hence the reason I'm asking on here!). Whenever anyone asks which horse is the "best", this guy (Pekky, or Press Time) is the one they always say is the best. He's not exactly the prettiest horse. Never was. He has a big ol' head, ewe neck that has always been on the thin side, and has immunity issues, so whenever ANY of the horses got sick... from anything... he usually got it too. (and that could be another reason why he's lost a ton of weight and isn't putting it on again). Unlike one of the other horses that was extremely thin (and I have no idea what happened to her), they keep trying with him... but they don't exactly know what to do. I was hoping... that I could get some help on here. I'll ask about whether or not he's been dewormed, and try and see if I can get him on a regular schedule with that. (get ALL of the horses on a regular schedule with that... it'll be hard though... I'll have to spend some time translating some pages of my horse books... so they can see it's not just the "crazy american" saying stuff like this). But... what are things that can fatten up a skinny horse? Forget about mentioning special feeds or ration balancers or anything. Can't find 'em here. Closest place to get something like that would be Hungary... or Greece... and there's no way they're going to be willing to shell out that much money to get them here. Nor am I willing. So... what are things that you can get at a all-purpose feed store (VERY basic stuff), grocery store, or some other basic store. Please remember that this is SERBIA, not the US. There are a ton of things that you can find in the US... that just don't exist here. I'm willing to put down the money to buy him his own "special" food so that he can gain the weight he needs to... but... I just don't know what to get. Corn? Beet pulp (if I can find it here)? If you have ANY more questions... please ask them. I'm not hiding anything... and this horse doesn't belong to me... but the owners are willing to try anything... because they do love this horse... but they just are at their wits end... and have been saying for the past two years that he's just "old". At 14... it's not a valid excuse. PLEASE help... thanks.
