I had a half of an over ripe watermelon and put it out with the horse and sheep thinking the horse wouldn't like it but the sheep would. I was wrong, the sheep didn't care for it but the horse loved it. She started eating the whole thing. I was worried that half a watermelon would be too much so I took it away from her after she had eaten half of it. Does anyone know how much is safe to let her eat. She'd have eaten a whole one if I let her.

A whole watermelon will not hurt them. I fed mine half of one this morning.

My kids love watermelon! I usually cut up the whole thing and between me, my husband the horse and the dogs we polish one off in one night.

Watermelons are pretty much benign, whatever size. My Boys have polished off half and whole Sugarbabies (round) and Carolinas (oblong, forearm length.) The carolina plant was doing erosion control in the pasture near the barn, and another one did a bangup job breaking down part of the manure pile.

Thanks for the reply's everyone! Now I feel bad that I took it away when she was obviously really enjoying it. Next time, I won't worry about it.

sounds like a wonderful, cool treat in the heat of summer! Am I safe to assume that with our 1600 pound draft that I would be okay feeding her a good sized watermelon? And do they eat the rind? Can other melon(s) be added to make it a really special treat after a hot trail ride (after she's cooled, that is)?
    This is interesting....

My horses love water melon. The kids just toss the skins over the fence and there isn't any left not long after.
