I was reading a post in the chat forum and got to thinking about this. For some reason my horses want to kill my dogs. The dogs have never bothered the horses at all. Where I bought my horse had a dog that was out with them while we were riding him all the time and my horse never even looked at him. Vinnie (horse) was fine with my dogs until I bought Starbuck for my wife. He has never liked dogs that I can tell. Any thoughts?

My horses used to hate dogs and would try to stomp them, but over time they have gotten better. Sometimes it is best to keep the dogs on leashes and just walk them near the horses with a fence separating them to get them adjusted.
Now the horses pretty much ignore dogs and will just shake their heads at annoying ones without trying to flatten them.

I have been thinking about leading the horse around with the dog at heel on the other side of me. I would take the Handy Stick along to enforce respect should the horse decide to go after the dog.

Luckily, my horses like my dogs, and the dogs pretty much ignore the horses, but at the barn I used to ride at, they had a mule that HATED dogs - she tried to kill 3 different dogs that had wandered into the pasture (I've heard that mules hate dogs as a rule, that is why donkeys and mules make good livestock guards). If my horses hate my dogs, I would work on training the dogs to respect the horses first, and then work on the horses, since dogs are predators and horses are prey animals. If the dog is well behaved around the horses (don't leave the dog in the pen/pasture without a leash, don't let the dog bark at the horses, get under its feet, etc), the horses will probably eventually learn to ignore it (like desensitizing to scary objects, etc).

I take the approach of management first, training second. Set both animals up to succeed at getting along (keeping dogs restrained/behaved at all times when around the horses), and hopefully it time things will calm down.

    Good luck!

My mare will tolerate them...but if they go behind her she WILL kick out. Got a dog awhile ago. He was being allowed to walk around the barn and his owner wasn't watching where he was going and he wasn't listening to me so Fiona got him.

But she'll tolerate them. Put her ears back and that's it when they're infront of her.

My colt LOVES them. Thinks they're great.

My mini filly...I don't know if she wants to play with them or fight them LOL

Sky LOVES Blitz and apparently most other dogs. He likes to rub his nose (and wipe the snot) all in Blitz's fur. It is unrequited love, though. Blitz could care less, LOL.

My horse loves my dogs, and will try to reach down to rub them with her nose, altho the puppy loves to lick her face:) Nosa will even let our 4 mo lab puppy lead her, despite the huge size differnce:) But I do know people whose horses hated dogs...

I need to know this too! Dusty, our palomino, will stomp after my little dog. with both front feet pounding --for sport? Does he think she is a predator? We don't know, but he cannot be trusted around her. I am interested in all the replies as well!

My little dog is PETRIFIED of the horses, so trying to socialize them together is very one sided! If I hold her up to him she tries to crawl inside my shirt, my coat...anywhere to get away from the mean ol' horsie. Can't say that I blame her. And, he doesn't care about her when she is not on the ground running around.

    I just keep them apart.
