Another vote for spending the money for the green guard muzzle. It's way lighter and better than any of the others I've tried. Yes my mare is still ****ed but not quite as much as when she was in the nylon type muzzles:rofl:

I use the Breathe Easy in blaze orange with a fly mask over it to keep it in place. Looked at the Greenguard and Harmany but not only were they expensive - they wouldn't work with the automatic waterers at the farm. So far - so good with the BE! I feed him a treat through the hole when I put it on and he accepts it knowing that it means he gets to go out with his friends.

Are they able to eat hay relatively well through the muzzles?

Mine can eat hay out of a slow feed net without a problem as long as he can push the muzzle flat to his face. So no on a free swinging net, but yes on one hanging against a stall wall or in a manger.

I also use a green guard and love it. The large pony size mask does fit in my automatic waterer which is a plus.

    They are.

It's easier to ration the hay though.

Yes - they are! Like DelP said. Mine had a slow feed net in the field as well. He has the Breathe Easy and it works fine!

Keep in mind that some horses can still eat a prodigious amount of grass through a muzzle.

I'm going to gradually accustom her back to pasture, plus grass will be brown soon.
