When I go to the barn I feed Monty 2lbs of MoorGlo+Focus SR+MSM before I lunge or ride him. Our rides are not long nor difficult and when I lunge him I stop before he starts to sweat.

    Now my question is....

Should I feed him afterwards instead? I go in between his morning and evening meal, so when I turn him out after work he also has his evening hay. Help me out! :) Just want to do the best for him.

*also, I have noticed that his poop looks dryer and he goes to drink water as soon as I turn him out...should I soak his feed?

If I feed before I work my horses, I wait at least 30 to 45 minutes after they are finished eating... depending how big the meal was... they get a light breakfast, but more for dinner.

If I feed after I ride I wait about 30 minutes before feeding.

As far as the water, does he have access to water while he is eating?

I've kind of been wondering the same thing...I usually go to the barn (weekdays anyway) at about 3:30 and I ride from about 4:30-5:30, and then cool him out and then let him eat...but sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't just be better to feed him before I ride.

So, as far as your question - feeding him after you work him shouldn't be a problem, just make sure he's completely cooled out before you do.

I wait a bit after they are done eating their grain. Don't so much worry if they are eating hay.

I've NEVER had a problem in situations where I rode right after he finished his grain, but I would never recommend it because things can go wrong and its not something you would want to do on a regular basis or when you didnt have too.

I don't think it matters whether you feed before or after. As long as before you wait a bit after their finish their grain, and if its after you wait until they are completely cooled out :)

btw, the times I have ridden right after he ate was when we were at a horse show, and we figured it was better to let the boy eat before we showed so he wasnt grumpy since it was way past when he was normally fed. But those times I don't really go out and make him work REAL hard, just go and show a class.

Dang--I wish I didn't board sometimes!! That is so time consuming! He has access to water in his pasture, but it isn't right in front of him--he has to walk there a little ways.

    feeding

When I ride During or around feeding time I usually feed before. After they are done I groom and tack this usually takes 30mins.

when I was training horses the barns rule was that the horses had to wait one hour before they were fed or dewormed. I have always followed that rule because it's how I was raised.

but if you think about before you ride you feed then groom and tack then warm up it's about an hour before your horse gets "hot" right?

As for the water does he have water when he eats? does the water outside come from a different source? does it get cleaned more or less often? all these could effect why your horse drinks when he goes out. as long as he is cool and has access to water when ever he wants and you have not had problems with impaction I wouldn't worry. If it really bothers you, ask your vet.

I personally prefer to feed after they have exercised. And I typically wait 30 minutes at minimum, or if it was a hard workout, i wait till they are cool enough.

A little in the stomach is okay

if you read threads on ulcers and such.....it's good to have a little something in the stomach, especially if the horse is prone to ulcers. (before you ride/exercise heavily)

But obviously you wouldn't feed a ton of grain, then get on and ride the pie out of them.

We always pull our horses out of pasture, feed the a little scoop of feed, then go about grooming, etc. Then we'll ride, but start off slow.

It helps train our pasture ponies to come GALLOPING to us when they hear our call, too :)

I feed after I work my horses... They only get fed when I do ride/work with them, so it works out for us and I save money since I don't feed daily anymore. They're on pasture grass and hay 24/7 though, so it really doesn't matter.
