So I know to measure the gullet of a western saddle you measue between the conchos, but how do you take the measurement on an english saddle? Is it even possible?

Also what measurement is considered average, wide, extra wide etc.?

faroutfax, my understanding is that the gullet is measured like this:

I got this photo from the TackWholesale.com site where they are measuring the gullet width on their Paris saddles.

However: They are WRONG calling it a Medium Width TREE...it's a medium width GULLET... the gullet and the tree aren't necessarily identical (witness what happens on a Bates, Wintec or Collegiate convertible...plus there are some "non changeable" English saddle brands where the gullets are WIDE but the TREE runs medium. All that photo (OR the "gullet measurement") will tell you is that it will be so many inches wide and should go over a set of withers of a certain size...the TREE fits the REST of the horse's back.

At least that is how I understand things from my last four months of saddle fitting fiascos!

So, did I really confuse you now, faroutfax? :p
