I was brushing out my new horses tail for the first time yesterday, and found out that she has a HUGE knot in it! It looked liked the horse had never had her tail brushed before in her whole 9 years! It starts at the end of her tail bone and goes about a foot or so down. I would never consider cutting it off at the begining of summer, but will in fall if I must. I am going to start tackling it with a long toothed comb tomorrow and see if I can get anywhere.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Get a heavy duty mane and tail detangler like Cowboy Magic. use it rather heavily and massage it into the knot, let set for a few minuts and message it in again. Take a large tooth comb and starting from the bottom begin to gently take out the knots working your way up. You may have to pick it out via hand some and use the comb some.

I had to take out a knot from a tail (back then there wasnt any detanglers out on the market) on a two year old. There was half a tree in the core of it. lol Actually it was a burr branch that was up the core of the tail. Took forever to get out. Using mineral oil was the thing to use then, it still was not easy.

Show sheen, or WD-40 will aid in getting the know out...don't cut your horse's tail off, the knot can be worked out, a little at a time...

Regular baby oil works great too just make sure to wash it and put detangler too, or keep it braided to avoid future problems :)

thanks! I'll start working on it right away. I would hate to have to cut her tail, its so pretty and full! My other mares tail is really thin so it was exciting to get a horse with a full long tail, but now I am thinking it isn't as wonderful as I thought!

I have used both and I really do love the Show Sheen and it sure works and is not as messy as WD-40. But WD-40 works good too. You can get this knot out with out cutting it. You may lose some hair but usually those hairs are already broke off so don't panic. I once fixed a tail that had not one lose hair to it the whole thing was a knot and in that knot was a million cockleburrs...It was bad!!! but we got it out just picking a little at a time. Oh and your fingers might get sore too!

Sounds familiar and I got a new horse yesterday and went to groom her and she had a wire stuck in her tail about 12 inches long! Amazing.....

Ha ha its amazing what these horses can get stuck in their hair! I live in the redwoods so I am always picking redwood leaves out of manes and tails during fall, I have become quite the expert at doing it!!

If you use W-D 40 you will want to wash out the tail very well removing as much of the stuff as possible.

Baby oil is mineral oil with a fragence in it.

Show Sheen works wonders on tangles..but if its that bad you will have to work it out....cowboy magic and mane and tail conditioner will help you too. Just plz dont cut it!! You can get it out!! =]]
