I am debating putting a doggie door in, that will allow the dogs to come and go into their large dog pen in the back yard whenever they want.
I live out in the sticks and someone told me they had heard of a lot of other critters getting in the dog door. :eek2:

While they DO have the automatic ones, I would rather spend about $60 on a regular one, then $250 on an auto one... UNLESS i'm going to be getting other critters in the house.

I have a cheap one for my kitties. It goes into the porch, and then I still have to open the house door from there. Good thing, too, because I've had skunks get in the kitty door. Doesn't take them too long to figure it out, lol!

I have heard of skunks and "other" cats coming in doggie doors, however I think it is because there is cat food on the other side of the door. I think if you kept the animal food far away from the door you will have less curious animals, although if you have a neighborhood cat the knows doggie doors, they may come and visit you just to say hi.

We get stray cats, possums, skunks and raccoons coming through ours. I think the squirrels have now figured it out.

We have one in our overhead garage door so the "barn" cats (read that "garage cats") can get in if they want to. But we have lots of uninvited guests as well.

    EEK!! :eek2:
i'm thinking if i put one in, i might need to spring for the automatic one!! since it will be from the dog pen (all fenced in with woven wire, will that keep stuff out?) right into my laundry room!

We have had dog doors for a majority of our life and never had anything get in especially if its for dogs (not cats) and leads to a fenced area. Our dogs do a good job of keeping any curious critters away from the thing. Cats on the other hand... I just cant see a cat trying to stop a skunk from going through its door, or even being around for the event since they tend to wander. I doubt your dogs would let a skunk or a cat that near to the house. We live in the middle of nowhere with a dog door that leads to a fenced yard (which is usually open). Nothing comes up near the house with the dogs around. Our goats are allowed to roam the property freely when we are outside to watch them. Or if we shut the gates and let them in the fenced yard... they see the dogs go in and out all the time and they still have not figured out the dog door.

We used to have raccoons and skunks get in through our doggie door when I was growing up. If the dogs were around they would keep things out, but if they were inside or in their kennels, all sorts of things would get in.

    Thanks everyone!

I have never seen any squirrels near the house since i've been there. seen possoms around the corner at my mom's in the barn and her shed, but never at my place. I DO have a cranky and bold fox that lives in the woods who chases my cat into my yard, but i would think the fence would keep her out.

I just hate to spend the money on a regular one, and end up with critters IN the house!!! then have to remove it and put in an auto one!
