I have heard that pears are dangerous to feed to horses. Is this true? Why?
Are there any other fruits/veg that are DANGERous to feed? I have seen someone recommend potatoes but ive always heard they are bad for horses. What is the truth? Are these myths??

hmmmm never heard of pears....I know my TB and pony love them...but since they can be expensive, they rarely do.

I know that rhuhbarb leaves as wel as potatoe tops are poisonous, but I wouldn't feed potatoes either.

Well all of ours eat pears, carrots, apples and peppermints and none of them have had any problems. Pears seem to be the favorite around here. Mine can hear the peppermint wrapper a mile away...lol...

I have read that fruits can be very good for horses, very high in anti-oxidants(sp?) I cant recall what kind are best but I know that apples, bannanas, and watermelon are all ok. My mare doesnt know what to do with an apple, but she looooooves bannanas! Keep in mind, these things should be fed sparingly because of their high sugar content.

Te Amo LOVES pears! Then again this five yr. old eats about anything. Carrots and apples are his favorite....but we do break them up into smaller chunks for him. I read a great true story in I think it was Practical Horsmen about a very old mare that got a piece of carrot stuck in her throat. Dang near died before they (owner/Vet) figured out what was wrong! So...now I try and get his "treats" to bite size.

Our horse will eat the peaches off the peach tree and the ones that fall to the ground. They love em.
