Another post about odd feet. Charlie's coronet bands are really bulging and feel soft and spongy. To be honest they have been this way on and off for years, but it comes and goes, and I was wondering if there was any cause for it or if I need to worry about it? I noticed it particularly today as it seems he has taken a small chunk out of the flesh on a hind hoof and it looks 'weird'. My technical term. I can take photos if anyone would like to diagnose/reassure me that I am worrying about nothing...

A picture would help a lot.

Is the horse often in wet footing? That can make the periople around the coronet band swell a bit.

But if his feet are dry, I would be very concerned.

Really wet today. I live in England, we have had major downpours and flooding today, Charlie is rugged and has shelter but the field is saturated. And he seems to like being out in the rain for some reason. Is that the most likely cause?
I'll take some pics when I go up tomorrow.

I went to take pics today, but the swelling had gone down a LOT. Also yesterday they were WHITE, but today are a more normal colour. I think that supports the theory that it was due to the wet ground, as it stopped raining at last this morning.
Here are the pics I took today of the hoof I thought looked 'weird', although like I said it looks a lot more normal today!

Also the heel bulbs are quite puffy, similar to the coronet, but I couldn't take photos of the bottom of the foot on my own :rolleyez:

Pretty much figured there was nothing anyone had to say on those last pics?! So either I was imagining things or no-one knew what I was on about...I must say it is VERY hard to take a picture that illustrates how big the coronet bands are, how swollen they look...every picture I take you can barely tell :rolleyez:
Anyway what I forgot to mention is that they seem to be peeling in places, particularly on the heel bulbs, as well as on the coronet band. I don't know, is this normal and I have just never noticed??? It doesn't look normal. I took a pic as best I could of the worst hoof:

See the peeling on the bulb? Is this just something that happens, or due to conditions/diet/age/shoeing or some kind of other issue? Would be grateful for any input.

I would say that it is from the moisture. Just like babies' b.utts get irritated and raised when they get diaper rash. Actually copme to think of it, we used diaoer rash ointment with Zinc oxide in it to help with het heels, so it would probably help with that, too. You just want to put it on when the area is dry so it does not hold the moisture in.

I would start there and see what happens. Oh, and of course drier ground would be great, but we cant control the weather unfortuantely!

Hi Charliesgirl - I am in NZ and have a wet paddock most years too. Same thing - coronet bands go white and soft. I think they just look bigger because of the colour.

I always assumed it was just because of the wet. Like when your fingers and toes go white and wrinkly if you stay in the bath too long :eek2:

The swelling is probably from the wet weather- you could put some hoofsaver moisturizing cream or similar on it if it starts getting yucky. The peel on the heel looks like an overreach injury.

Is it just me or is the left heel totally hanging over the shoe? Either or you have underrun heels and the shoe needs to be set back further.

I actually think the periople is separtating at the heel because of the moisture... Kind of like how our cuticles get mushy and start lifting up when we go swimming for too long. ;)
