WHY OH WHY do English saddles look so laughably small on my mare? I don't have a picture because she lost some condition recently and her old lady topline popped up, and I'm embarrassed (but we're working on it), but I tried my close contact saddle on her and it looked like I perched a toy saddle on her. She's not particular big (16hh), but my saddle is a 16.5" close contact. I thought it looked horrible!

Does anyone else think English saddles look oddly small on horses? I normally ride Western so that could be part of the issue, but geez. LOL.

I have the opposite problem. Saddles look huge on her back. Especially the english. Charm gets lost in all that leather. Thankfully she likes the Abetta Endurance saddle.

They all look pretty big compared with racing saddles :D even the exercise saddle I used to use could look huge after a day of saddling low weights at the races.

That you're used to a Western saddle size is probably the only issue, unless you got the wrong size English saddle.

I ride a 16” western and a 16.5” English. I can comfortable ride anything from a 14.5-16” western and 16-17.5” English. I remember a 17.5 dressage saddle looking much more “normal” on her than my 16.5” close contact, but it’s probably just that I’m used to the look of a western saddle.

I just wondered if anyone else notices weird little things like that. Lol.

I don't really ride western so I don't have the comparison. But saddles do look WAY smaller on my 16.2hh mare vs my little 15hh gelding.

Saddles never looked too bad on the 17hh TB, but rugs tend to look like mini skirts, especially his canvas.

    well.. technically

a 16.5 is really a child's sized saddle in most cases or very petite adult.

So yes it'll look small :)

Hah, well... I am a very petite adult, according to Wrangler jeans. Size 0, as compared to size 5/6 Ariats.

If anyone else would like to feel petite, but Wrangler jeans! Lol.
