So...I write stories, but sometimes I would LOVE to have a more sparsely used word in my stories and was wondering if you guys could help give me random words you know that are used less (example-"amble" instead of "walk").

When I was in ninth grade, I used the word "euphoric" when my teacher asked us for synonyms for "happy". He exclaimed, "Wow, that's a college word!" I got it off the computer synonym thingy, but sometimes when I do that, seems I've heard all the words too many times for a lot of stuff...or the computer needs a bigger dictionary! Haha.

I'd love to learn some new words to make my writing less blah, so if anybody knows any, I'd appreciate you adding it to this thread! =)

Does anyone know of words relating to voice? Like instead of saying, "She had a sweet voice," I'd like synonyms...if anyone knows of a word...my brother did but never told me, haha.

Editted to Add: Thanks, Back43, for recommending Freerice.com. =) I had a lot of fun on that site.

Haha, okay, so maybe not what you are looking for, but all the big words I know are random words that no one uses. I'm just really odd that way

Haha... most of the words that everyone posted, I have known since second grade. *sigh* I read WAY too much. ;)

Freerice.com is a great way to learn new words. :) I don't quite know what you are looking for... so it's a little hard to truly help.

Number one: I think you mean instead of "more sparsely used words," less common words."

As a professional writer, all of us GET OUT THE THESAURUS!!! Every writer I know gets stuck for words, and uses this on their lap while writing.

I, too, had quite a precocious vocabulary as a child, so I know what you mean.

A thesaurus is a great thing to invest in if you're planning on writing a lot... just like a photographer would purchase special lenses for his/her camera. :)
