Are Salt Licks Necessary?

    Overview of Salt Toxicity - Toxicology - Merck Veterinary Manual
    According to this the lethal dose for salt is about 2g per kg weight. If my math is working correctly an average horse would die from eating 2 pounds of salt a day.
    I also read that consuming to much salt can lead to ulcers. But can't find the article anymore.

    Not gonna lie - I thought it was going to be WAY more than that. It is almost crazy to think only 2lbs. is all it takes. When you put it into perspective of a horse that weighs 1100lb. ya know?

    Crazy stuff.

    I read in a separate thread, buried by now, that iodized salt is actually better? A member on here was actually revered by their vet for choosing iodized because apparently that is what *should* be fed?

    Thoughts...
