I'm currently leasing a mare I would like to purchase as my first horse. I feel comfortable on her but I worry that I'm too tall for her and that I may throw her off balance. I'm about 5'9, all the height is in my legs. I'm barely 120 lbs. She is about 14.3hh and more of a petite build. I intend on using her for trails and just pleasure riding. I possibly want to start her over low jumps for fun but don't intend on competing. What do you guys think? [IMG]

For what you want right now no, but yes, you're too tall for her. I'd keep looking, but that's me. I'm tall at 5'7", not as much as you, but even I'd feel that I'm too tall for her. You chose a horse for a long time, not just for the "now".

I don't know your age, but if you're not done growing a bit, consider that also.

Edited added - because you're height is mostly in your legs, you can get by and your balance not be off. I personally wouldn't choose a mount of this size, but if you're happy, it's up to you. There's no reason for you to not. But, in reality, a taller mount would be a better fit. You have no real reason though weight wise to not choose her.

Do as you please, it's just my opinion.

Honestly I think you look perfectly fine...
And your profile says you are 21, yes? So shouldn't get any taller.

Oh ok, I thought she was a teenager. She doesn't look that bad, but my instincts say eh..

You are fine. A little tall but not excessively.

Looks good. If you ride western, stock horses are on the smaller size anyway and big men ride them. For jumping, you have short stirrups, no problem there either.

Yeah, you are a little tall and having a taller mount or one with a bigger barrel would make riding a tad easier. You have to get your feet out of the way of her elbows as is.
But that is nothing new for you. At 21 you should be done growing so you'll be fine.
She is a cute mare, have fun!

I think you look fine, especially since you aren't very heavy. Sometimes your balance might be off but for low fences and pleasure riding I don't think you'll have any problems!
