Researchers have figured out that a piece of the tau protein molecule sticks out and starts forming the tangles of dementia.

In this article the researcher describes it as acting somewhat like a prion. This would seem like a real problem to get at, but the researcher mentions there's already a drug that cleans up a similar protein.

This could really be a game-changer. Most of these really complex illnesses, we have to simply keep trying to learn about the cause and how it does what it does, to find the key to prevention.

    I know, right!

Most proteins are really complicated. They have a 3-d shape with multiple spiral legs and it seems to take a lot of work to figure out what each one looks like when it's normal, let alone when it's messed up. But once we know how they're messed up then we have a chance of fixing them. That's the important thing.

For a long time it was thought that the tau protein was 'normal' until it - until it wasn't. Until it started forming tangles. Now they know it's messed up even before the tangles form. So one person's dementia goes quicker because he or she has more tangles than another person. So it's 'dose related.'

So many people have suffered so much pain and sadness because of these illnesses. We just have to keep at this.
