3/4 pickup with best gas mileage?? **for commute AND hauling horses

    Kind of off topic, but still horsey related. :) We are looking into getting a 3/4 ton pickup but many don't post the gas mileage for their vehicles. Since the truck would also be used for a short commute to work daily, we want to find one that gets good gas mileage when its not hauling but still has the power to pull a steel 3h gooseneck. Anyone have any gas mileage you'd like to share from your experiences? From my research, diesel is getting the better MPG but with the cost of it, using it for a daily commute doesn't seem realistic? Most interested in highway miles, since that's what the commute consists of. :D Thanks!!

    Nice. I know that 3/4 ton and gas mileage are almost contradictions, but I am curious just the same.

    I guess I will again take the unpopular opinion, but you might save more in the long run by getting a car good on gas mileage and getting a truck and only using it for what you need to. But of course if you live in a rural area like I do, people question your sexual preference because you find driving a four cylinder car more economical than driving an F250 everywhere.

    Best advice is the one about small car, and truck for hauling only.

    Most trucks? You are going to be doing good to get 17 MPG without the trailer and that is a hopeful estimate too. With small 4 cylinder car? 35-40+. You will save so much in fuel costs it will make you giddy.

    Look for an older Toyota, or Honda or Nissan. Make sure about the 4 cylinder though, as it makes a big difference.

    Agree with meljean. Get a small used car for a couple thousand and a truck to pull with. I would stick with a diesel because you get much better mileage with pulling.

    I have a 3/4 Ton Chevy HD 4X4 with the 6.0 and I get 10MPG in town on my way to work and 13MPG on the highway, and if I am towing I get 10MPG highway and town. Having a car and truck would be best, however I could only afford one, so I got what I needed (a truck) and make the gas mileage work. It does stink though.

    Thanks for the input. :) I've thought about getting a little commuter car, but the car would be hubby's and he is VERY into appearances. He currently drives a decked out Mustang GT-- so having him drive a little car would be an "insult to his manhood". Or something like that! ;) I drive a car that gets 36 MPG freeway, but I guess I'm not into being macho. Haha.

    Our other option was to keep his 'Stang and get an older truck for hauling ONLY. But, he now thinks he needs a truck. BOYS!

    My 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 with towing package - hauls 5 horse GN no prob, drove accross country w/it at 15 MPG with a loaded horse trailer (1 WB, 1 Clyde, + everything I own, not the 5 horse though). Around town I get about 15 MPG also. At 150,000 towing miles on the original equipment, I think it's pretty good that I've had zero major problems - I do have extra transmission cooling and service regularly.

    My 1990 F250 I retrofitted with a '96 454 from a mustang :) it gets 21/25 MPG around town/highway empty and about 12 MPG towing. It has 250,000 miles and is on it's 3rd clutch, but besides a mouse nest in the heater, it has also had no major problems. It currently hauls a 3 horse GN up and down highway passes in MT.

    My mercury sable only got 17 MPG in town and 21 MPG Highway - it was better for me to drive the truck F250

    My friend had a Toyota truck - she hauled a 5 horse GN accross the country multiple times. She abused that thing. Got 17 MPG towing and about 25 MPG empty. She ruined the transmission driving it 90 mph at all times fully loaded - took about 2 years and 120,000 miles.

    There's truth. BF picked up a 1 ton GMC work truck (king cab and extended bed) for under 10k. He drives his corvette whenever the weather is good.
